HB 106 Summary: Village Public Safety Officers

• Establishes village public safety officer program in Department of Public Safety to assist rural areas with life and property protection and probation/parole supervision functions

• Authorizes grants to nonprofit regional corporations and, if declined, to municipalities with populations under 10,000, with consultation required before awarding to municipalities

• Defines "rural area" as a community with population under 1,000 located in the unorganized borough or in a borough not connected by road to Anchorage or Fairbanks

• Requires Department of Public Safety and Department of Corrections to jointly execute agreements with grantees and coordinate grant administration

• Authorizes municipalities to receive grants from and contract with Department of Public Safety under the village public safety officer program
