Health care insurers must provide coverage for diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders, including pharmacy care, psychiatric care, psychological care, rehabilitative care, and therapeutic care prescribed by licensed physicians or psychologists.

Coverage applies only to individuals under 21 years of age with a maximum annual benefit of $36,000, adjusted annually beginning January 1, 2011 by the Consumer Price Index.

Coverage cannot limit the number of visits to autism service providers and must cover treatment coordinated with education programs, though coordination with education programs is not required.

Insurers may not terminate, refuse to issue, amend, or renew coverage for individuals diagnosed with or receiving treatment for autism spectrum disorders.

The law applies to health insurance policies offered, issued, delivered, or renewed on or after January 1, 2010, and takes effect immediately.
