HB 368 Summary

• Students must successfully complete a civics examination based on questions from the U.S. naturalization examination before receiving a secondary school diploma.

• School districts must administer the civics examination at least once per school year and provide opportunities for retesting and remediation for students who fail.

• The state department shall develop the civics examination required by the bill.

• Students with disabilities who fail the examination after one retest may receive a diploma by completing an alternative assessment through their individualized education program or education plan, which must conform as closely as possible to naturalization examination standards.

• The act becomes effective July 1, 2011.
