Alaska State Legislature urges United States Congress to classify hydroelectric power as a renewable and alternative energy source in federal law and programs.

Some federal renewable energy programs currently do not classify hydroelectric power as renewable, preventing Alaska from participating in federal programs without restriction.

Alaska has abundant water supplies and can develop hydroelectric projects using high-elevation lakes and run-of-the-river systems with minimal environmental effects.

Reducing dependence on fossil fuels through hydroelectric development would lower electricity costs for Alaska residents, particularly in rural areas where rates reach $1 per kilowatt-hour.

Resolution directs copies be sent to President Obama, Vice President Biden, congressional leadership, and Alaska's federal delegation including Senators Murkowski and Begich and Representative Young.
