CSSB 102(JUD) Summary

• Raises the compulsory school attendance age from under 16 years to under 18 years of age for all children in Alaska.

• Amends the crime of contributing to the delinquency of a minor to expand the offense to include aiding or encouraging children under 18 (instead of under 16) to be repeatedly absent from school without just cause.

• Replaces "between" language with "who is" and "years of age or older" to clarify that children seven years of age and older must attend school through age 17.

• Adds "or has graduated from a secondary school" as an exemption to the compulsory attendance requirement in addition to completing the 12th grade.

• Maintains existing exemptions to compulsory attendance including private school attendance, home schooling, federal school attendance, medical conditions, court custody, suspension/expulsion, distance from school, and school board excusal.
