CS for Senate Bill No. 105(HSS) Summary

• School districts must continue educating homeless students in their school of origin and provide comparable transportation services for the remainder of the school year, unless the student moves to a different school district.

• Students in out-of-home state care are entitled to waiver of tuition, fees, and room and board at state-supported educational institutions if they were in state custody for at least 6 consecutive months on or after age 16 and are under 29 years old.

• State custody extensions for children in need of aid can extend to age 21 (instead of 19) with court approval if continued custody is in the person's best interests and they consent.

• Department of Health and Social Services must conduct monthly face-to-face visits with children in state custody to address case planning, service delivery, safety, permanency, and well-being.

• Out-of-home care transition program expanded to provide up to 9 months of monthly living expense stipends (up to foster parent daily rate) for youth ages 18-23 who have left care and are participating in services.
