SB 281 - Alaska Healthy Schools Act

• School districts and private schools must adopt integrated pest management (IPM) plans in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Conservation that comply with state guidelines.

• Each school district and private school must designate at least one IPM coordinator responsible for pest management oversight, pesticide notifications, record-keeping, and completing 6 hours of annual continuing education on pest management.

• Schools must provide at least 48 hours advance written and posted notice to students, parents, and staff before pesticide use (or 24 hours notice in declared pest emergencies), including pesticide brand name, active ingredients, application location, date, time, and toxicity level.

• Schools must maintain 10-year records of all pesticide applications and submit annual reports to the Department of Environmental Conservation documenting pesticide quantities, target pests, cost, emergency applications, and nonchemical prevention measures used.

• Schools must adopt plans to minimize or eliminate hazardous substances in school facilities and designate a hazardous substances coordinator to provide similar 48-hour advance notice before activities that may expose students and staff to hazardous substances.
