HB 98 - State Flag Display, Folding, and Retirement

• Establishes display requirements for the Alaska state flag in public facilities: horizontally with the hoist on the left and North Star in the upper right corner, or vertically with the hoist at the top and North Star in the lower right corner.

• Specifies an eight-step folding procedure for the state flag, including lengthwise and widthwise folds with the North Star positioned to face up at the conclusion.

• Requires that when presenting a folded state flag to another person, it should be turned so the North Star is nearest the receiver.

• Permits respectful retirement of worn, tattered, or damaged state flags by fire in a ceremony or other dignified manner, preferably in a public ceremony directed by uniformed military or patriotic society personnel, with private ceremonies as an acceptable alternative.

• Repeals the previous subsection AS 44.09.030(c).
