• Recognizes that approximately 52,263 Alaskans (7.5% of the state population) are 65 years or older, with numbers increasing as baby boomers reach retirement age.

• Notes that reports of harm filed with adult protective services have risen 169 percent in the past four years, with the most common allegations involving self-neglect and financial exploitation.

• States that reports filed with the office of the long-term care ombudsman have increased 200 percent in the past three years, primarily involving abuse and gross neglect in assisted living facilities.

• Supports the governor's efforts to improve elder safety through state agencies including adult protective services, the long-term care ombudsman office, elder fraud assistance, and the Medicaid fraud control unit.

• Encourages public education and awareness campaigns to increase reporting of elder abuse and supports prevention and early intervention services through senior nutrition programs, volunteer ombudsmen, adult protective services, and aging and disability resource centers.
