HJR 8 - Opposition to Genetically Engineered Salmon

• Urges the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to deny any application to sell genetically engineered salmon in the United States.

• Urges compliance with P.L. 110-85 (Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007) requiring the FDA Commissioner to consult with the National Marine Fisheries Service regarding environmental risks of genetically engineered seafood products.

• Requires product labeling to include "Genetically Modified" prominently displayed on the front of the package if the application is approved despite environmental and health concerns.

• Expresses concerns that transgenic salmon would threaten wild Atlantic salmon listed under the Endangered Species Act and poses risks to wild salmon in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

• Notes the applicant proposes fertilization in Canada and grow-out in Panama with shipment to the United States, and cites insufficient long-term safety testing and potential harm to Alaska's wild seafood industry.
