SB 140 Summary

• Classifies certain synthetic cathinone substances as Schedule IIA controlled substances, including cathinone, methcathinone, mephedrone, MDPV, and substituted cathinones (commonly known as "bath salts")

• Establishes possession thresholds for Schedule IIA substances: 500 milligrams or more constitutes fourth-degree misconduct, while less than 500 milligrams constitutes fifth-degree misconduct

• Amends misconduct statutes to clarify that certain Schedule IIA substances listed in the new classification are subject to the specified weight-based penalties

• Exempts bupropion and compounds listed in other schedules from the substituted cathinones classification

• Takes effect immediately upon enactment
