New drivers in Alaska must display a moveable sticker issued by the department in their vehicle for one year, identifying the vehicle as operated by a new driver.

The sticker requirement applies to persons issued their first driver's license on or after January 1, 2017, in Alaska or any other jurisdiction.

Failure to display the required sticker is an infraction punishable by a fine of not more than $200, but a person cannot be convicted if they have no prior violations and produce proof of obtaining and affixing the sticker in court.

Peace officers cannot stop or detain a vehicle solely to check for sticker compliance and cannot issue citations for violations unless they have probable cause for a separate traffic violation.

The sticker requirement does not apply to drivers operating vehicles in off-road areas or in municipalities with populations under 500.
