HB 294 Summary: Herring Spawn Classics

• Adds "herring spawn classics" as a permitted gambling activity under Alaska law, defined as a game of chance where prizes are awarded for guessing the postseason preliminary estimate of nautical miles of shoreline receiving Pacific herring spawn as determined by aerial surveys conducted between March and May.

• Limits herring spawn classics to operation and administration by the Sitka Tribe of Alaska only.

• Restricts net proceeds from herring spawn classics to three uses: awarding prizes to contestants or participants, funding social services, and funding educational purposes including scholarships.

• Includes herring spawn classics in restrictions on Department of Fish and Game employee participation in salmon classics and other similar activities.

• Adds herring spawn classics to the list of activities for which a single permittee may not contract with more than one operator at a time.
