Surviving spouses and dependent children of deceased peace officers and firefighters are eligible for medical insurance coverage under group policies that covered the officer or firefighter during employment.

The state shall pay 100 percent of employer contribution costs for medical benefits provided to eligible survivors under the group insurance plan.

Surviving spouses who are eligible for Medicare are excluded from coverage eligibility.

Medical benefits for survivor dependents continue until the last day of the month when there is no surviving spouse.

The act is retroactive to January 1, 2013 and takes effect immediately.
