Department may issue limited teacher certificates valid only in specific areas of expertise: Alaska Native Culture, military science, vocational or technical education, or any subject taught in a non-English language.

Applicants must be requested by their school board or regional educational attendance area and demonstrate instructional skills and subject matter expertise sufficient to be competent as a teacher.

For non-English instruction certificates, examinations may not require a minimum score unless given in the instructional language for which the certificate is valid.

Limited teacher certificates are initially valid for one year and may be extended or renewed if the requesting school board certifies the teacher has demonstrated skills in classroom instruction and student assessment.

The board may require certificants to undertake academic training as specified by regulations and make satisfactory progress in that training.
