Governor serves as commander in chief of the organized militia through the adjutant general, who exercises control and command of the military department and adopts regulations for militia organization and administration.

Organized militia may not be used against or to mitigate lawful activities, including organized labor activities.

Adjutant general may order militia members to active state service with their consent for full-time duty, and decisions to order militia to duty by the adjutant general are subject to governor review.

Alaska State Defense Force may be organized with U.S. Congressional consent and activated when the National Guard or Naval Militia is unavailable due to federal service or when augmentation is needed; members performing inactive duty or training receive benefits for line-of-duty injuries, disabilities, or death.

Adjutant general authority is expanded in areas including officer commission terminations, resignation acceptances, retirement recommendations, regulation adoption for courts-martial, and tuition assistance administration for all militia branches.
