HB 235 Summary

• Establishes the North Star Medal to be awarded by the governor to peace officers, correctional officers, firefighters, first responders, or volunteer search and rescue members who die or are seriously injured in the line of duty while displaying exceptional bravery or heroism.

• Governor presents recipients with a ribbon, medal, and citation during a ceremony held no more than once per year, with awards given to the recipient or their next of kin if deceased.

• Nominations must be submitted to the commissioner of public safety by the highest ranking supervisor of the nominee's department or organization.

• Commissioner of public safety reviews nominations and submits recommended names to the governor for final approval.
