Department of Health and Social Services must apply for a federal section 1115 waiver to establish work requirements for medical assistance recipients under AS 47.07.020.

Recipients subject to work requirements must participate in work activities for a minimum of 20 hours per week by providing proof of employment, active job seeking, educational/training programs, volunteering, or subsistence activities.

Recipients may satisfy work requirements by participating in the Alaska temporary assistance program and complying with its work activities requirement.

Exemptions from work requirements apply to individuals under 18 or 65+ years old, parents/caretakers of infants (up to 12 months) or disabled children, caretakers of disabled relatives requiring 24-hour care, parents/caretakers of children under 6 without available childcare, and individuals unable to work for medical reasons.

Work requirement must not prevent individuals with substance abuse disorders from obtaining treatment, and medical assistance must be terminated no less than 90 days after notice for recipients who fail to comply.
