HB 6 Summary

• Establishes the Jonesville Public Use Area to protect year-round general public recreation, maintain fish and wildlife habitat, and provide diverse recreational opportunities including off-road vehicles and nonmotorized activities.

• Designates specific state-owned land and water parcels in Township 19 North, Range 2-3 East and Township 20 North, Range 2-3 East, Seward Meridian as the public use area and assigns management to the Department of Natural Resources.

• Prohibits the commissioner from restricting lawful hunting, fishing, trapping, mineral exploration and development, and use of weapons (except where public safety is threatened) within the area.

• Requires the commissioner to adopt and maintain a management plan after public hearings, consult with the Department of Fish and Game, and minimize damage to critical habitat while maintaining off-road motor vehicle options.

• Establishes enforcement authority for department employees and peace officers to issue citations and arrest violators, with violations classified as state violations subject to a bail schedule to be established by the supreme court.
