SB 55 Summary

• Removes inflation adjustment requirement for bad check classification thresholds, establishing fixed dollar amounts of $25,000 (Class B felony), $1,000-$25,000 (Class C felony), $250-$1,000 (Class A misdemeanor), and under $250 (Class B misdemeanor)

• Expands protective order violations to include orders issued, filed, or recognized in other jurisdictions and orders under child custody statutes, with penalties up to $25,000 fine and one year incarceration

• Modifies probation suspension eligibility by changing disqualifying criteria from "convicted of" to "charged with" certain violent crimes, allowing courts to suspend judgment in more domestic violence cases with proper findings

• Extends probation periods to up to 10 years for unclassified felonies (previously 5 years) and clarifies restitution remains enforceable when judgment suspension is later dismissed

• Requires law enforcement and state departments to inventory untested sexual assault examination kits by September 1, 2017, and report backlog status to the legislature by November 1, 2017
