AK SB75

Allows the Alaska Department of Education to issue limited teacher certificates valid only in specific areas of expertise for teaching Alaska Native Culture, military science, vocational/technical education, or any subject when instruction is not in English.

Requires applicants to demonstrate instructional skills and subject matter expertise sufficient to assure public competency as a teacher, as determined by board regulations.

Certificates must be requested by the school board of the district, regional educational attendance area, or charter school academic policy committee where the applicant will teach.

Prohibits the board from requiring non-English language instruction applicants to achieve a minimum examination score unless the exam is administered in the instructional language for which the certificate is valid.

Limited teacher certificates are initially valid for one year and may be extended or renewed if the requesting school board or charter school certifies the person has demonstrated classroom instruction and student assessment skills.
