HB 25 Summary

• Expands the definition of "peace officer" to include employees of private police organizations authorized by the Alaska Police Standards Council.

• Requires private police organization owners to be current or former peace officers in any state, Alaska residents for at least 10 years, and agree to comply with council accreditation standards and applicable law.

• Authorizes the Alaska Police Standards Council to establish accreditation standards for private police organizations consistent with existing police standards and to revoke authorization after a hearing if standards are violated.

• Requires private police officers to complete basic police training approved by the council, meet other employment qualifications, and maintain valid certification or complete refresher training to remain employed.

• Prohibits reapplication for authorization by any person whose private police organization authorization has been revoked by the council.
