HB 255 Summary

• Amends AS 47.25.975 to require the Department of Health and Social Services to request, accept, and attempt to renew or extend federal waivers under 7 U.S.C. 2015(o)(4) that waive work requirements and time limits for able-bodied adults without dependents to the maximum extent allowed by federal law for each area of the state

• Mandates the department implement any approved federal waiver to the maximum extent allowed and prohibits establishing work requirements or time limits more stringent than those permitted under the waiver

• Requires the Department of Health and Social Services to promptly apply to the federal government for a waiver if necessary to implement the bill's changes

• Makes the bill's provisions conditional on approval by the United States Department of Agriculture and requires the commissioner to notify the revisor of statutes by January 1, 2021 if approval is obtained

• Establishes the bill's effective date as the day after the revisor of statutes receives notice of federal approval
