SB 134 Summary

• Amends AS 47.07.030(b) to add "professional counseling services" to the list of optional medical assistance services that the Department of Health and Social Services may offer to Medicaid recipients.

• Defines "professional counseling services" in AS 47.07.900(20) as services provided by a person licensed as a professional counselor under AS 08.29, and allows such services to be provided at facilities that are not designated clinic service providers.

• Requires the Department of Health and Social Services to amend and submit the state plan for medical assistance coverage to the United States Department of Health and Human Services for federal approval.

• Makes the amendments conditional on federal approval, with the commissioner of health and social services required to notify the revisor of statutes on or before October 1, 2021 if approved by the federal government.

• Sections 1 and 2 take effect the day after the revisor of statutes receives written notice from the commissioner confirming federal approval.
