SB 73 Summary

• Establishes a statutory order of succession to the lieutenant governor's office if a vacancy occurs: attorney general, commissioner of health and social services, commissioner of education and early development, commissioner of administration, adjutant general, commissioner of commerce/community/economic development, commissioner of labor and workforce development, and commissioner of public safety.

• Removes the requirement that the governor appoint a successor to the lieutenant governor if the person in line succeeds to that office.

• Clarifies that if the lieutenant governor succeeds to governor and the governor's office becomes vacant again during the same term, the person who succeeded to lieutenant governor becomes acting governor until a special election is held.

• In case of simultaneous vacancies in both governor and lieutenant governor offices, the next person in the statutory succession line succeeds directly to acting governor.

• Repeals AS 44.19.040 and takes effect on the first Monday in December following the 2022 state gubernatorial election.
