HCS SB 132 Summary

• Prescription information in the controlled substance database shall be purged after two years from the date dispensed.

• Practitioners are not required to review database information before dispensing, prescribing, or administering controlled substances in specified circumstances including inpatient settings, emergencies, ambulances, emergency rooms, surgery/medical procedures within 48 hours, hospices, and nursing homes with in-house pharmacies.

• Nonrefillable controlled substance prescriptions lasting no more than three days are exempt from database review requirements.

• Veterinarians are exempt from database review requirements when prescribing or dispensing controlled substances.

• Adds definition of "practitioner" to include physicians, dentists, advanced practice registered nurses, optometrists, scientific investigators, veterinarians, and licensed pharmacies, hospitals, or other institutions authorized to dispense controlled substances.
