HB 138 Summary

• Establishes the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact to allow audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed in one member state to practice in other member states under a "compact privilege."

• Creates the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Compact Commission as a joint public agency to administer the compact, establish rules, maintain a data system, and coordinate discipline and investigations across member states.

• Adds criminal background check requirements (fingerprints and federal background check) for both audiologist and speech-language pathologist licensees, with results forwarded to the Department of Public Safety.

• Allows licensed professionals to practice via telehealth in remote member states and includes special provisions for active duty military personnel and their spouses to maintain a home state license designation.

• Takes effect July 1, 2024, with transition language allowing current licensees to continue practicing under existing licenses until normal expiration.
