HJR 4 Summary

• Honors the Alaska-Korea relationship and celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States and Republic of Korea (signed October 1, 1953; entered into force November 17, 1954)

• Celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement ending the Korean War and the 120th anniversary of Korean immigration to the United States beginning in 1903

• Recognizes the United States and Republic of Korea as major trade partners with approximately $169 billion in annual bilateral trade, and notes Alaska's $2.3 billion in annual trade with Korea including minerals, fish, and computer products

• Acknowledges that 7,000 Koreans and Korean Americans live in Alaska, Korean companies including Korean Air and Asiana Airlines operate in the state, and Anchorage and Incheon have been sister cities since 1986

• Directs copies of the resolution be sent to U.S. and Korean government officials and Alaska's congressional delegation
