Department of Corrections must issue a valid state identification card (AS 33.30.105) to prisoners upon release, with the department paying the application fee for an identification card under AS 18.65.310 if the prisoner does not already have one.

Identification cards issued by the Department of Corrections must be identical to motor vehicle operator's licenses except for color and must display a distinguishing number, prisoner's name, date of birth, physical description, photograph, security features, and statement that the card is not valid for purchasing alcohol.

Identification cards issued under AS 33.30.105 expire 180 days after issuance or 90 days after a person under 21 reaches 21 years of age, whichever occurs first, and cannot display the prisoner's social security number.

Violations related to fraudulent identification cards, including making false applications or allowing another person to use the card, are punishable as a misdemeanor by a fine of $500 or 60 days in jail, or both.

Identification cards issued under AS 33.30.105 are recognized as acceptable identification for voter registration, fishing permits, and debtor financing statements; effective date is January 1, 2024.
