School terms may not begin before the first Tuesday in September in Alaska school districts.

School terms must include at least 180 days in session unless approved by the commissioner for in-service training days (up to 10 days) or emergency closures.

School boards may adopt alternative school terms with at least 740 hours of instruction for kindergarten through third grade and at least 900 hours for grades four through twelve if the commissioner approves an acceptable plan providing educational equivalent to 180 days.

The act applies only to contracts and collective bargaining agreements that become legally binding on or after the effective date of the legislation.
