SB 222 Summary

• Amends AS 21.42.375(e) to define "diagnostic breast examination" as examination using contrast-enhanced mammography, diagnostic mammography, breast MRI, ultrasound, or dedicated mammography equipment to evaluate abnormalities detected in screening or by other means.

• Adds new definition of "supplemental breast examination" for examinations based on personal or family medical history of breast cancer or other risk factors using the same imaging technologies.

• Requires health care insurers offering individual or group plans that cover mammography screening to eliminate cost sharing, deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, and out-of-pocket expenses for low-dose mammography screening, diagnostic breast examinations, and supplemental breast examinations, except as necessary to qualify as high deductible health plans under federal tax law.

• Applies to insurance policies and contracts issued, delivered, or renewed on or after January 1, 2025.

• Authorizes the director of the division of insurance to adopt implementation regulations.
