HB127 Summary

• Amends Section 32-9-20, Code of Alabama 1975, to allow an additional 400-pound weight allowance for vehicles equipped with functioning auxiliary power or idle reduction technology units.

• Vehicle operators must provide written proof or certification of the auxiliary power unit (APU) weight and demonstrate that idle reduction technology is fully functional at all times to qualify for the exemption.

• The 400-pound allowance applies to gross, axle, tandem, and bridge formula weight limits, with the actual weight allowed not exceeding 400 pounds or the certified APU weight, whichever is less.

• Written proof or certification of APU weight must be made available to law enforcement officers upon request if a vehicle is found in violation of weight laws.

• The act becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor, or upon otherwise becoming law.
