HB219 Summary

• Authorizes the Commissioner of Insurance to establish nonbinding, nonadversarial alternative dispute resolution procedures for claims relating to personal and commercial lines of insurance.

• Requires the commissioner to establish a process within the department to assist Alabama citizens in understanding, evaluating, and comparing insurance products, including training personnel and developing computer systems to compare policy features and rates.

• Mandates the commissioner to compile and release annually a public list of all written requests for assistance received by the department, itemized by individual request and line of insurance involved.

• Requires the commissioner's annual report to the Governor and legislative committees be made available on the department's website and include financial statements, insurer business status, delinquency proceedings, and recommendations on insurance law amendments.

• Becomes effective January 1, 2011.
