HB397 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Section 32-5A-171 to classify any open portion of Corridor X/I-22 between the Alabama/Mississippi state line and the Jefferson County line as an interstate highway for speed limit purposes.

• Allows vehicles on the designated Corridor X/I-22 section to travel at the interstate speed limit of 70 miles per hour instead of the standard 65 miles per hour for four-lane highways.

• Maintains all other existing speed limit provisions including 30 mph in urban districts, 55 mph on rural highways, and 55 mph for vehicles carrying explosives or hazardous materials.

• Specifies that law enforcement in municipalities with fewer than 19,000 residents cannot enforce speed limits on interstate highways.

• Takes effect immediately upon passage and Governor approval.
