HB50 Summary

• Amends Section 36-1-6.1 of the Alabama Code to extend state liability insurance coverage to inmates assigned to operate motor vehicles on public roads or streets within Alabama.

• Expands the definition of covered individuals under the state's basic liability insurance policy to include inmates operating vehicles, alongside existing coverage for state employees, agents, retired physicians and dentists at free clinics, and approved foster parents and foster care providers.

• Requires the Finance Director to determine the type of blanket insurance policy needed and may authorize self-insurance of the state under specified conditions.

• Clarifies that plaintiffs in lawsuits against inmates operating motor vehicles must serve the Alabama Attorney General with a copy of the suit, consistent with existing requirements for other covered parties.

• Takes effect on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
