HB 756 Summary

• Creates the Old Federal Road Task Force to study and promote identification of the Old Federal Road, a historic military route built in 1811 connecting Fort Stoddert to Fort Wilkinson and serving as a major pioneer migration route through Alabama.

• Task force composed of representatives from the Alabama Historical Commission, Department of Archives and History, four-year public universities along the road, one state senator, three state representatives, Alabama Tourism Department, and one member from each congressional district where the road was located.

• Requires task force to present annual findings, conclusions, and recommendations to the Legislature and Governor by the tenth day of each regular legislative session on how to best identify and promote the Old Federal Road.

• Members serve without compensation but may receive per diem reimbursement for travel expenses as allowed by law, with no legislative per diem permitted when the Legislature is in session or members are paid for other state business.

• Task force chair and vice chair elected at first meeting called by Speaker of the House no later than September 1, 2010; task force must annually report to Legislature on diversity compliance by second legislative day of each session.
