HB806 Summary

• Continues the Alabama Board of Court Reporting until October 1, 2012, under the Alabama Sunset Law with statutory modifications to Code sections 34-8B-4, 34-8B-5, 34-8B-8, 34-8B-9, and 34-8B-15.

• Removes the Alabama Judicial Conference as a board member source and replaces it with Chief Justice appointment from nominees provided by the Administrative Office of Courts.

• Allows court reporters to satisfy continuing education requirements using approved Alabama State Bar continuing legal education courses in addition to other approved courses.

• Prohibits admission of depositions taken by court reporters with financial interest or preferred vendor arrangements in Alabama courts, except when offered by the non-interested party and otherwise admissible under rules of evidence.

• Creates temporary graduate licenses valid for 18 months for court reporting school graduates and limits temporary licenses for exam applicants to expire 60 days after the next board examination, with no more than two additional temporary licenses per applicant.
