Crystal Vaughn, age 27, and her 18-month-old son, Malachi, died on January 6, 2009, when their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters on Buncomb Creek near Reform in Pickens County, Alabama.

The Vaughn family organized a fundraising campaign including benefit dinners and door-to-door solicitation to support volunteer fire departments and rescue squads in Pickens County.

The family's efforts raised approximately $17,000 toward the purchase of swift water rescue equipment for Pickens County fire departments.

The House of Representatives honors and commends the Vaughn Family for their exceptional and selfless community service in turning a personal tragedy into positive action for their community.
