Volunteer firefighters and volunteer emergency medical service providers subpoenaed as witnesses in civil depositions or court hearings shall receive $70 per day or $35 per half-day from the party requesting the subpoena, not including travel time.

Witnesses who reside more than 10 miles from the deposition or court hearing location shall receive mileage reimbursement at the rate allowed to Alabama state employees for instate travel for each mile traveled to and from the location.

Payment of per diem must be made immediately upon discharge of the witness from the proceeding.

The act applies only to civil matters involving events or transactions the volunteer firefighter or EMS provider witnessed or investigated in the course of their duties.

The act became effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
