SB131 Summary

• Hartselle City Council shall call a referendum election to allow qualified electors to vote on changing the Hartselle City Board of Education from appointed to elected.

• If approved by referendum, the board shall consist of five members elected at-large by a majority of qualified city electors, with members required to be at least 19 years old, city residents for 90+ consecutive days, and without convictions for crimes involving moral turpitude.

• Board members shall serve the same terms as Hartselle City Council members, with initial compensation of $500 per month and subsequent compensation established by the board.

• Board vacancies shall be filled by appointment by remaining board members within 45 days, or if unfilled, by the Hartselle City Council, or if still unfilled, by the State Superintendent of Education.

• The board chair and vice chair shall be elected from membership and the chair shall preside over meetings, set meeting dates and agendas, ensure proper budget notice, and promote the school system.
