SB140 Summary

• City or county boards of education may adopt a policy allowing security personnel to carry firearms while on duty, subject to specified requirements.

• Security personnel who are not certified law enforcement officers are prohibited from carrying firearms during school hours, scheduled extracurricular activities, or when students are on campus unless personnel have been notified in advance.

• All security personnel carrying firearms must complete firearms training equivalent to that required for law enforcement officers by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission and must annually pass firearm requalification.

• Non-certified security personnel carrying firearms must obtain a pistol carry license and also carry a means of passive force in addition to the firearm.

• The act became effective July 1, 2010, and does not mandate that boards of education adopt such a policy.
