SB183 Summary

• Amends Section 40-12-244 of the Alabama Code to extend motor vehicle license tax and registration fee exemptions to retirees from the United States Armed Forces and United States Armed Forces reserve organizations.

• Exemption applies to one passenger vehicle per retiree and extends only to distinctive United States Armed Forces Retired license tags.

• Requires applicants to be Alabama residents at the time the exemption is claimed and must present proper identification and proof of residency on forms prescribed by the Department of Revenue.

• Allows retired military personnel to obtain additional distinctive license plates for other passenger vehicles they own by paying regular privilege or license tax and registration fees.

• Becomes effective January 1 following passage and approval by the Governor, or upon otherwise becoming law.
