Alabama Forestry Commission must prepare a list of all members of certified volunteer fire departments and the Firefighters' Personnel Standards and Education Commission must prepare a list of all members of paid or part-paid fire departments, with both lists submitted to county licensing officials by December 1 annually.

Firefighters applying for distinctive license plates must present proof of membership in a fire department and pay regular license fees but are exempt from the $3 additional fee.

Distinctive license plates may only be used on personally-owned private passenger vehicles, including station wagons and pick-up trucks, registered in the firefighter's name and issued in lieu of standard license plates.

Widows or widowers of paid or volunteer firefighters who die in the line of duty may receive a distinctive license plate upon written request, with "line of duty" deaths defined as circumstances that would result in a death benefit under Section 11-43-144.

Anyone proven to have falsely obtained or certified an individual for a distinctive firefighter license plate is guilty of a Class C misdemeanor.
