SB288 Summary

• Allows vehicles equipped with functioning auxiliary power units (APUs) or idle reduction technology to exceed Alabama weight limits by up to 400 pounds total on gross, axle, tandem, or bridge formula weights.

• Requires vehicle operators to provide written proof or certification of the APU weight and demonstrate the idle reduction technology is fully functional at all times to qualify for the weight allowance.

• The weight exemption cannot exceed 400 pounds or the actual certified weight of the APU, whichever is less.

• Implements at the state highway level the weight limit increase for idle reduction technology vehicles as authorized by the Federal Energy Policy Act of 2005.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
