SB290 Summary

• Removes the requirement that approved institutions under the Alabama Student Grant Program be formally seeking accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

• Adds eligibility to the program for independent postsecondary institutions in Montgomery County, Alabama that have been incorporated and continuously operating for over 50 years and accredited for over 10 years by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

• Maintains existing requirements that approved institutions must have academic curricula that are not principally sectarian, must not award primarily theological or seminarian degrees, and must not discriminate in admissions based on religious preference.

• Prohibits institutions receiving direct state appropriations from being considered approved institutions under the program.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
