SB596 Summary

• Amends Section 32-6-8 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to allow applicants for learner's licenses to provide a valid U.S. or foreign passport as proof of age in addition to a birth certificate.

• Currently requires applicants aged 15-16 to substantiate their age by filing a certified copy of their birth certificate with the Department of Public Safety; expands acceptable identification options.

• Applies to learner's license applicants under age 16 who must otherwise pass the same examination required for a driver's license, excluding the driving test.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
