AL HB125

Amends Sections 14-6-1 and 36-22-3 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to codify sovereign immunity protections for sheriff employees acting under the sheriff's direction and supervision.

Specifies that persons employed by the sheriff to carry out jail operations and inmate supervision duties are entitled to the same immunities and legal protections granted to the sheriff under Alabama law and the Alabama Constitution of 1901.

Clarifies that any sheriff duties including crime investigation, arrest, evidence gathering, and court process execution may be performed by deputies, jailers, corrections officers, or other employees acting for and under the sheriff's direction and supervision.

Applies sovereign immunity protections to all persons undertaking duties for the sheriff as determined appropriate by the sheriff in accordance with state law.

Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
