HB194 Summary

• Amends Section 16-25A-5 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to explicitly exempt the Public Education Employees' Health Insurance Plan from the Alabama Insurance Code (Chapter 1, Title 27).

• Authorizes the board to establish fully insured or self-insured health insurance plans for public education employees and retired employees with coverage options including hospitalization, surgical, medical, cancer, dental, and major medical benefits.

• Permits member employees and retired employees to elect optional or supplemental coverage such as dental, cancer, or indemnity benefits, with employees not making an election automatically enrolled in basic medical primary coverage.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and Governor approval, or when otherwise becoming law.
