HB630 Summary

• County commission members shall serve on a part-time basis beginning November 2012, receiving an annual salary of $25,000 payable in equal monthly installments with no additional expense allowances except as provided in the act.

• Washington County Commission must establish a centralized road system with at least one shop location, and may establish up to two locations if the county engineer recommends additional locations are needed for economical operation.

• County commission shall employ a qualified civil engineer as county engineer to oversee maintenance and construction of county roads, highways, bridges, and shops, with the engineer serving at the pleasure of the commission and receiving salary from the gasoline tax fund.

• County engineer has authority to employ and supervise assistants, perform engineering services, maintain accounting records, and make requisitions for materials and equipment, but expenditure authority is limited to funds appropriated by the commission.

• Commission members shall inspect roads and bridges in their districts, hear citizen complaints, and may use county vehicles on an as-needed basis or receive mileage reimbursement up to $200 per month at the state employee rate.
