• Recognizes the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) for two water systems winning the 2009 Region IV Safe Drinking Water Excellence Awards from the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

• ADEM, established in 1982, administers major federal environmental laws and works with more than 700 water systems in Alabama to provide safe drinking water to four million citizens.

• Alabama water systems received 2 of only 3 awards distributed among the eight southeastern states in EPA Region IV (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee).

• Award criteria include compliance with federal and state drinking water standards, sanitary survey results, administrative management, operations and maintenance, and quality customer service.
